From concept through construction.
Prism Lighting Design provides independent architectural lighting design and consulting services for residential, hospitality, commercial, and landscape projects.
We work collaboratively with architects, interior designers, homeowners, and construction professionals to develop lighting that complements the architecture while meeting the practical needs of each space.
Our involvement can begin with early design discussions or targeted consultations and extend through construction documentation, coordination, installation, and final lighting adjustments.
Residential Lighting Design
We design architectural lighting for custom homes, renovations, coastal residences, and mountain retreats. Our work considers the way clients live, the qualities of natural daylight, architectural materials, artwork, and the transition between interior and exterior spaces.
From carefully located recessed lighting to integrated millwork illumination, decorative fixture coordination, and intuitive lighting controls, we create cohesive lighting environments that balance function, visual comfort, and atmosphere.
Hospitality and Wellness Lighting Design
Hotels, restaurants, bars, spas, and wellness destinations require lighting that responds to different activities while establishing a memorable identity.
We develop layered lighting strategies that support the guest experience, highlight architectural details, and create comfortable transitions between spaces. Our services include lighting concepts, fixture selection, architectural integration, lighting controls, and construction documentation.
Landscape and Exterior Lighting Design
Thoughtful exterior lighting enhances architecture, supports safe movement, and reveals the natural beauty of a landscape without overpowering it.
Our approach prioritizes carefully directed light, glare control, warm color temperatures, and preservation of the nighttime environment. We design lighting for pathways, gardens, terraces, building façades, and outdoor gathering spaces, with particular consideration for minimizing unnecessary light spill.
Lighting Renovations and Retrofits
Improving existing lighting does not always require starting over. We evaluate existing installations and identify opportunities to improve visual comfort, lighting quality, efficiency, and control.
Our services may include fixture replacement strategies, architectural lighting modifications, lighting controls updates, and the careful integration of new lighting into existing or historic spaces.
Lighting Design Consulting and Documentation
Our technical services include lighting concept development, fixture specifications, photometric calculations, lighting layouts, architectural details, lighting controls strategies, construction documents, and coordination with architects, engineers, and contractors.
We also provide construction-phase support, submittal reviews, site observations, fixture aiming, and lighting scene adjustments to help carry the design intent through installation.

"Have you ever walked into a room and marveled at how the light was diffused? Probably not—and for good reason. When lighting is impeccable you hardly notice it. If a room is lit the right way, everyone looks their best and feels relaxed and comfortable, but they don't know why,"
-Lindsey Adelman
PRE DESIGN
At Prism Lighting Design, we initiate our comprehensive lighting services with a pre-design phase. Through Lighting Consulting, we engage in detailed discussions about potential improvements for existing lighting or upcoming projects. Our Lighting Concepting sessions explore various design approaches tailored to your space. When standard options fall short, we facilitate the creation of Custom Signs and Custom Luminaires, ensuring your unique vision is brought to life.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Our commitment to meticulous planning is evident in our Design Documents. We produce detailed Lighting Design Documentation, creating plans and diagrams with precise lighting locations. Lighting Specifications involve thorough research to identify the best-fit products for your project. Lighting Calculations utilize 3D models to estimate brightness levels, aiding in planning board submissions and fixture selection. Lighting Mockups allow you to experience firsthand how fixtures illuminate spaces, aiding in the decision-making process.
CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS
SUBMITTAL
REVIEWS
In the Construction Documents phase, we go beyond the ordinary. Our team generates proprietary Architectural Lighting Details, ensuring the construction team has all the necessary information for seamless project execution. Lighting Controls Strategy documents facilitate material selection for electricians. For commercial projects, we conduct local and code research, providing Comcheck when required. Our partnership with an Electrical Engineer enables us to offer turnkey, stamped drawings.
Quality control is paramount. We meticulously review all submittals to eliminate errors and ensure clients receive precisely what they expect. Our thorough Submittal Reviews contribute to a smooth construction process, minimizing delays and complications.
MEP COORDINATION
Prism Lighting Design excels in coordination. We review mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings to guarantee fixtures have the required space for installation. Our MEP Coordination ensures a harmonious integration of lighting elements with other essential systems.
CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION
When challenges arise on-site, our team is there with a swift and effective response. Our General Construction Administration addresses issues such as ceiling conflicts promptly, ensuring the project stays on track.
AIM & FOCUS
The culmination of our services involves the Aim and Focus phase. We meticulously adjust each adjustable fixture, reviewing optical outputs and providing lenses and color gels as needed for a flawless outcome. With dimming systems, we craft lighting scenes for specific moods, actively involving client feedback and participation.
PUNCH LIST
Our commitment extends beyond installation. We conduct a thorough site visit, compiling a detailed Punch List of items that need attention before project sign-off, ensuring the final outcome meets our high standards and client expectations.
